What fabrics to choose in summer and which to avoid?

Cotton, viscose, linen, polyester, polyamide, nylon, acrylic – there are quite a few types of materials, but not all of them are suitable for wearing in high temperatures. Which ones are perfect?

Summer, especially when it’s hot, can be a bit of a problem when it comes to styling. It is hot and sweaty and we intuitively opt for loose-fitting rather than tight-fitting clothes.

Unfortunately sometimes it turns out that seemingly light and oversized dress is not suitable for hot weather at all. Why? The fabric is to blame. It depends on it, whether our skin will be able to breathe freely, or it will be too hot and not comfortable. Before buying, always read the composition carefully.

The best fabrics for summer

Cotton

A natural, breathable fabric which is able to absorb up to 25 percent of water vapor. Pleasantly cool and non-allergenic.

Especially recommended is bamboo cotton, ideal for babies – the most delicate, soft, breathable and non-irritating, with antibacterial properties.

Do not be afraid of clothes, which also have an admixture of plastic (about 5-10 percent) – this makes them more durable and will serve us for longer.

Linen

Natural, airy, extremely soft and pleasant to the touch. Can absorb large amounts of sweat without the impression of a wet fabric. Recommended for people with delicate and sensitive skin. Linen clothes are easily available in every chain store. Unfortunately they have one disadvantage – they crease quite strongly.

Ecological fabrics: modal, lyocell, cupro

In summer, we can also choose ecological, but synthetic fabrics, such as modal, lyocell (equivalent to denim) or cupro. They are produced from wood cellulose. They show high resistance to damage, are light, have excellent moisture absorption and keep the skin dry.

Viscose

Viscose, although also a synthetic material, has such good cooling and antiseptic properties that it is highly recommended for hot weather. It is distinguished by its lightness and breathability, additionally it protects against overheating of the skin and excessive sweating, as well as it is non-allergenic.

Silk

Very pleasant to the touch, smooth, soft and slippery, with a delicate sheen. Silk clothes are very elegant, non-allergenic, do not stretch and are able to absorb up to 30 percent of water vapor. However, one must be careful with excessive exposure of silk to the sun.

Seersucker

This is a waffled fabric, somewhat resembling the structure of bark, which is used to make bed linens, among other things. It is naturally creased, so it does not require any ironing. It guarantees proper air circulation and does not stick closely to the body.

The worst fabrics for summer

Polyester

The undisputed king of the list, but shrouded in a very bad reputation. No wonder. It is artificial, which does not allow the skin to breathe, overheats and sweats in it. Unfortunately, it is also very cheap and… often used by producers as the main material of summer dresses, shirts or pants.

Acrylic

Although we often see it in winter garments, it can also appear on bedspreads or cardigans. It is a cheap substitute for wool, but does not have its properties at all. Acrylic clothes are not comfortable to wear and additionally make us too hot.

Nylon

This is another synthetic fabric that is not suitable for summer styling. It is not air permeable in any way, so the perspiration of our body increases, which is not pleasant.
